The design of a piping system has been known since centuries ago when people from China utilized bamboo as a means to bring the water from the source to watering the paddy field. History also stated that the people from Indus Valley had been using a piping system to deliver the water into the houses. Don’t forget to mention the people from Egypt who bring the water from The Nile River for irrigation purposes.

In modern life, piping has been used to transport water from sources to the distribution points and then eventually end up at our houses. Piping also being used to transport oil from the wells to the gathering point and then to the Refinery Plant for further processing, before sending it to the end-user. In Oil Refinery Plant or Gas Plant, for instance, piping is visible being used to transfer liquids from one equipment to another equipment at various locations. Crucially, piping also plays a major role in protecting life and property as fire protection piping networks in residential, commercial, industrial, and other buildings.

Ok. So piping is important, we know now. But what exactly piping is? What do you call as piping? More importantly, what is a piping system? Is that pipe only? or pipe with something else? We will find out soon below.

According to Mohinder L. Nayar in his famous Piping Handbook, Seventh Edition, we call a piping system if we have a set of pipes along with others component and accessories with the same sets of design condition and which interconnected each other. The piping system shall consist of pipes, flanges, fittings, bolting, gaskets, and other piping components, as well as a pipe support. So, when the pipe joined with fittings, such as elbows, reducer, and then connected to flanges, valves, and properly supported by pipe supports, then we can call as piping.

☘☘☘

In this course, we will learn about the piping system which normally used in Oil and Gas Industry. We basically will learn about pipe material, pipe size and schedule, pipe fittings, flanges, gasket, bolt, and nuts, and finally, we will discuss about pipe support. That’s why the course title is Basic Piping Engineering since we will be learning everything about and related to basic of piping.

At the end of this learning, Students would be expected to have a good understanding about the type of piping normally used in Oil and Gas Industry. Furthermore, this course will also a very good starting point before proceeding to the next course about piping stress analysis.

☘☘☘

The course has been carefully prepared in order to be easier to follow and understand and will consist of 7 (seven) lessons:

1. Pipe Material
2. Pipe Properties
3. Pipe Sizes and Schedules
4. Pipe Fittings
5. Pipe Flanges
6. Gasket, Bolt and Nuts
7. Standard Pipe Support

Good!

Review Singkat
